As the 2nd most populous country in the world, and one of the most influencial, it makes a lot of sense that India's Rupee has a symbol of it's own. I don't really see the flag concept that he's trying to push, but anyways, it's recognizable and solid. It's crazy to think that people design these sorts of things. Gonna look great in his portfolio, ha.

India and Nepal

In Kathmandu now, and for the past 2 months I've been away from my design life and traveling with my friend Mattias through India and Nepal. I felt like my blog was a bit neglected, so I wanted to put up a couple photos (for my very few followers).

Starting in Mumbai, we traveled north through the heat of India. Through Agra, and Rajasthan and Delhi. The heat (115 degrees) was becoming unbearable, so we flew to the southern tip, to Kerala. After two weeks in the calmness of the Indian south, we headed north again and entered Nepal. For the past 3 weeks we have been trekking in the Himalayas, within the Annapurna range, and exploring the insanity of Kathmandu.

(The above paragraph in an insanely paraphrased version of what has been happening).

In 3 days we begin the second part of the trip. Beginning in Hong Kong, we will make our way south to Singapore over the course of 2 months. It has been, to say the least, an absolute adventure! I have realized how much I love New York..

John Gall is the vice president and art director at Vintage/Anchor Books and designer of the latest cover of Vladimir Nobokov's Lolita.

John's work never fails to impress me. His book covers consistently strike me as emotional and profound. Everything he does deals with plurality of meaning, which to me is one of the essential elements in the creation of interesting, thought-provoking design.

I am familiar with his design for the cover of Lolita, but I am also familiar with the design that was abandoned. I am not in the know as to why, in fact, Mr. Gall is the Art Director so perhaps the decision was his alone to turn the lips on their correct side, horizontal and void of any deeper secondary meaning. To me, it is a dead idea. The lips as they currently sit are nothing but lips. Face lips, that is.

I find this so often in design. When an idea so ingenious and simple as John Gall's initial Lolita design is boiled down and rendered into something that we hope is palatable for the general public. Something that will not offend. I respect the fact that the initial idea was where his heart was, but it disappoints me to find another stroke of genius fall victim to the societal rules of what is and what is not acceptable.

Walking through the woods you see the chaos of the leaves and the trees, rocks and bushes pressing all around you, there seems to be no sense to it. Elevating high above the treeline allows you to see that there is actually an order–that it does have a shape afterall. Sometimes it seems impossible to reach a height high enough to make sense it. But it all has order.

This is a thought paraphrased from a discussion in the incredible film, Old Joy. One of the most persuasive portraits of generational malaise put to film.

A recently finished an online banner ad for the New York Philharmonic. Featured in the Arts section of the New York Times.

Broke in the sense of penniless or financially ruined has been in the language for 300 years or more, but 'Go for Broke' in the sense of expecting to win all or lose one's last stake is a gambler's term dating back perhaps 100 years. It also turns up in sports in the sense of giving one's utmost, win or lose.

I have been laying out type, thinking about a new tattoo on my arm. This is a saying, a mantra that I have admired for a very long time. Not many people know it, and I like that.

Scandinavian Heritage Festival

A self-initiated event identity for a celebration that I would love to see happen and would proudly partake in. The flags of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden all use the Nordic cross and when conjoined forms a naturally interesting visual.

I've titled the event "Scandinavian Heritage Festival New York City" and designed the look in the spirit of the region. A vibrant and specific color palette and pattern, utilitarian design and type layout and enough pickled herring for the rest of your life.

Exciting News. My Doldrum Typeface was selected to take part in the amazing collaborative LetterCult's "Best of 2009" for custom typography. I am proud to have been selected among some of my favorite typographers, including the amazing Alex Trochut.

LetterCult is an attempt to showcase artists and designers doing remarkable work with Custom Letters. This group includes type designers, letterers, sign painters, graffiti artists, stone carvers, calligraphers, poster artists, and graphic designers. Just people. Who make letters.

The Gorbals

Chef Ilan Hall is very close to opening the doors to his Downtown Los Angeles restaurant, The Gorbals. My long-lasting design relationship with Ilan naturally transitioned into creating this beautifully restrained identity for his new locale. Drawing inspiration from his Mother's Jewish past, and his Father's Scottish past–The Gorbals was born.

The name "The Gorbals" is taken from a district of Glasgow, Scotland, just south of the River Clyde. It is the birthplace, and area where the Chef's Father grew up. This unique identity is rooted in local history, personal history and will set The Gorbals apart.

Design scope of work included fully-functional identity system, website, print materials and collateral. T-shirts are on their way as well. Keep yer' eye out!

Anorak Magazine

UK-based, Anorak Magazine, “The Happy Mag for Kids” is nothing less than amazing. Using contemporary, international illustration and unique stories, this quarterly appeals to kids and adults and artists alike!

I was asked to produce a series of illustrations as a guest artist about my childhood growing up in Northern Nevada, and what I remembered most of it. For me it was the unique landscape and mixture of desert and mountains.

I am proud to have been asked to participate alongside such wonderful illustrators as Adrian Fleet, Hannah Waldron, Jean Jullien, Jeremy Ville, Marcus Walters, Rob Flowers, Simon Peplow & Supermundane.

Anorak can be found in select newsstands and book stores around the world. It’s well worth a look, and maybe even a subscription!

I love Mexico. I love all the hand painted signs, murals, walls and ads all over Mexico. They have a charm and whimsy that I think is all their own. Something very Mexican.

Last Night, I was thinking how cool it would be to have one on our awesome white brick walls here in Brooklyn. So, to no delay, I sketched this beauty out, stenciled it and we began to paint. My roommate Jeff and I were in the zone, and the outcome...a beautiful adornment for our wonderful apartment. A little reminder of Mexico everyday. And every time you have to use el baño.

The Kiox Atelier is the super-hip musk ox of the kiosk world. An LA-based, fresh, fun identity system created for Thomas Mueller's shiny new Southern California boutique–complete with a new stationery system, custom embroidered polos, stickers, mugs and more. I think I saw David Beckham wearing one of the famous Kiox "Ox Collars" that you can buy at the official website HERE.

Their fledgling showcase experiment, Art vs. Design, attempts to bring some closure to the age-old question and argument between artists and designers–Which is more powerful? Art or Design? Which moves us as people more and which will continue to shape the world as we know it? So...they want you (the public) to decide!

I thought of this while at a bar with my buddy Mattias. It's fun to use your imagination. I don't think a Purse Snapping Turtle would be so successful. The getaway would be slow.

La Rivo.

The Italian based winery, Moletto, asked me to help develop a new identity for their revolutionary new wine – La Rivo. The scope of work involved the actual naming of the product, designing a series of contemporary labels that will distinguish the wine and a unique secondary pattern for a variety of uses. La Rivo features a Pinot Grigio, Riesling and a delicious Pinot Noir.

The name La Rivo was inspired by the Italian word, la rivoluzione, which means "revolution". We went in this direction due to the innovative and revolutionary new bottling technology that the winemaker has put into use. A super-hard, chillable plastic that retains all the aesthetic appeal of a glass bottle, but has all the advantages of plastic. Also, shipping costs from Europe were slashed by nearly half due to the lightweight nature of the material.

The set of wines each feature a contemporary Italian revolutionary. In this case – an artist, an inventor and an advocate for world peace. The shape-set, primary color palette, and pattern root the design in fundamentals. Just as in revolutionary thinking, fundamental theories must be sound in order to create change.

That thing just above this that looks like a tangled rat nest is the flow chart of my life. Amazing right?

I have been thinking a lot lately. About a lot of different things. Some positive, some negative – but mostly about the future. I have come to the conclusion that success and happiness depends on where you are.

I have never really thought of it before. I suppose i've always thought that if i'm in the big city, things will just start popping and buzzing. Maybe they are. Maybe they aren't.

But! I think that a person's success/happiness/sanity are all very intimately connected...and intertwined into that connection is the place. And with that place comes all of the character of that place. The food, the weather, the nature, the people.

Do you agree? At least it's a fun exercise...it most definitely is fun to think about new places!

For me, the dark, poetic songwriting of Isaac Brock borders on sheer genius and has to be some of the best I've ever heard (or read). A couple photos from places i've been. The first one is in Puebla, Mexico eating pumpkin glaze cookies that were so unbelievable. The second is nationalist graffiti in Québec City, Québec right after the 400th year anniversary of the founding of the city. The third is my neighborhood, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York after a bike ride on a hot summer day.
